Cat Breeds by Intelligence

Animal Planet has seen fit to categorize cat intelligence by breed. Of course, this is at best an unscientific assessment. Within every breed there are smart and stupid cats. And until they learn to take an IQ test, cats will always be judged by Human standards – extremely subjective and anthropomorphic standards, at that.

At least Animal Planet has allowed for grey areas by coming up with several categories of cat smarts. This way a Manx, for instance, can be compared favorably to an Abyssinian, while both rank higher than a Persian and of course lower than a Sphynx, the seemingly undisputed smartest cat breed.

Here is Animal Planet’s list of Cat Breeds by Intelligence…

MENSA Candidate:

    Sphynx

Pretty Darn Smart:

    Balinese Bengal
    Colorprint Shorthair
    Havana Brown
    Javanese
    Oriental Shorthair
    Siamese

Smart:

    Burmese
    Chartreux
    Devon Rex
    Egyptian Mau
    Japanese Bobtail
    Korat
    Norwegian Forest Cat
    Ocicat
    Russian Blue
    Siberian
    Singapura
    Tonkinese
    Turkish Angora
    Turkish Van

At Least Can Find Their Way Home:

    Abyssinian
    American Curl
    American Wirehair
    British Shorthair
    Cornish Rex
    Cymric
    Maine Coon
    Manx
    Ragdoll
    Scottish Fold
    Snowshoe
    Somali

Would Help to Be Cute:

    American Shorthair
    Birman
    Bombay

Not Much Happening Under All That Hair:

    Persian

Lights Are On, But Nobody’s Home:

    Exotic Shorthair
    Himalayan

Don’t see you’re Tabby on the list? That’s because Tabby, Calico, Tortoise Shell, etc. are color patterns found in many breeds, just as Polydactilism is a physical anomaly found in many breeds.

You don’t know what a smart cat is until you’ve (been owned by) a Norwegian Forrest Cat. We have had lots of ‘em, Siamese being the absolute dumbest animal I have ever seen.

  • I agree, Nataly, that any cat can be particularly smart within its breed, and some factors of cat intelligence depend on how well they are raised and trained. Maine Coons are of average intelligence to begin with, so with the attention you give to yours, it could be very smart indeed!

  • I don’t agree with that list. My lovely Maine Coon is very smart, but not “At Least Can Find Their Way Home”! And traing of that breed is similar to dog training… That mean – cat is very smart!
