Corpse of the Week – Bleeding Hearts of Valentine

Ah, Valentine’s Day. It brings to mind and heart things like love, romance, candle-lit dinners, boxes of chocolates, and bullet-riddled corpses in a Chicago garage.

Not Feeling the Love

Not Feeling the Love

Seven corpses, to be exact. In 1929, Al Capone’s South Side Italian gang orchestrated the ambush of members of Bugs Moran’s North Side Irish gang. Only five of the victims were gang members. One was a friend, and one was their car mechanic. Highball, a German Shepherd, survived.

Neither Capone nor Moran were at the scene, typical of cowardly bosses who make minions do their dirty work. Sort of like today’s corporate execs and the Pentagon.

In 1967, they tore down the garage at 2122 North Clark Street and put up a parking lot.

Actually, Moran was supposed to be there, arrived late, saw machine gun toting men dressed as cops and split, figuring he stumbled on a raid. Men dressed as cops turned out to be the killers in disguise.
