I’m Thinking of Buying a Sealskin Coat
The misguided folks at PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and FOA (Friends of Animals) are harassing Olympian and three-time U.S. Champion figure skater Johnny Weir for having a tuft of fox fur on his costume. FOA publicly addressed Weir with, “Friends of Animals urges you, for the sake of humanity, your Olympic ambitions and the hopes of all Americans this winter, to stop wearing the skins of animals.”
The sake of Humanity? Weir’s Olympic ambitions? Reality check: Most Americans wear and/or eat animals to some extent. FOA and PETA really need to learn how to prioritize. How many of these people have so much as demonstrated against this illegal, immoral war in Iraq that killed more than a million innocent Humans?I’m sure plenty of these animal rights activists cringe at the thought of having their invalid Mom or Dad move in with them. How many turn a blind eye to a homeless beggar on the sidewalk, or staunchly oppose universal health care? How many totally ignore the millions of Humans starving to death around the world, the millions of children who are maimed and enslaved every year, and the billions of people who have little or no civil liberties? Such caring people.
Every time these animals-first whack jobs “liberate” farm-raised and cage-raised animals, those very animals starve to death or are hit by cars because they never learned survival skills. Every time an animal “rights” activist damages private property or physically assaults a fellow Human, they lower themselves to the gutter level of wanton vandals.
Where’s their respect for Human rights? Where’s their respect for a person’s belongings or the fruits of their honest, hard labor? Where’s their respect for law and due process?
PETA and FOA members are entitled to their opinions. People who hold opposing viewpoints are entitled to theirs. Private property and Human rights should never be violated in order for either side to make a point.
Weir answered his protesters by saying, “I totally get the dirtiness of the fur industry and how terrible it is to animals. But it’s not something that’s the number one priority in my life. There are humans dying every day. There are thousands if not millions of homeless people in New York City. Look at what just happened in Haiti.
“I tend to focus my energy, if there is a cause, on Humans. While that may be callous and bad of me, it’s my choice.
“Every skater is wearing skates made out of cow,” Weir continued. “Maybe I’m wearing a cute little fox while everyone else is wearing cow, but we’re all still wearing animals.”
Here here, fox-boy!
The laws are what they are until they are changed. These activists should hire some lawyers and lobbyists and get litigious if they want to see any reasonable change, rather than continue to damage their own credibility with their ridiculous bad behavior and nonsensical demands.
As for me, I’ll be cheering on fox-boy in the Olympics.
