Is Twitter Too Simple?
In O.C. DeeDee’s NeverTrust Twitter Comments blog from last week, this site’s current lists editor decided to take issue with my earlier blog about my disappointment in Twitter as a conduit to this blog site (The Twitter Myth).
Ms. DeeDee asks that she be allowed to contribute to our Twittering chores, insisting that her more conversational approach will yield more visits. I certainly won’t object to her Pollyanna project. I’d love to be proven wrong about what I see as the prevailing self-serving nature of Twitter – especially if it benefits SnarlyBoodle.com.
I just don’t know if Twitter is up to the task. MySpace and Facebook are becoming increasingly cluttered with special features to the point of losing focus, but they still offer their patrons a useful home page. Messages and pictures can be sent and received. At a mere glance, you can see conversations between your friends and their friends. These sites are digital playgrounds, your home page is a central control panel where everything is laid out for easy access.
At a mere glance, Twitter displays a scroll of mindless nattering. Click on any particular “following” icon to see only their side of their conversations. Click your own Twitter Direct Messages and see what you’ve sent or what you’ve received, but not in a format that would even suggest a comprehensible exchange.
O.C. DeeDee’s optimism may actually lead to an increase in click-throughs to SnarlyBoodle.com, currently averaging almost one a day from its 1,000 followers. This will be an interesting media experiment in how social networking might be better utilized to drive traffic to a blog site. And if it doesn’t work, maybe our anal-retentive friend will just stick to her usual copy-and-paste lists.
