Join This Liddle Olympic Project
Rina Liddle is a visual artist in Vancouver, BC, home of the 2010 Olympics. While many many locals – including myself – feel used and alienated by the city and trepidatious about what this circus will do to our personal standards of living, Ms. Liddle is taking a positive spin.
We Are Watching is her “video / surveillance / book project,” and she is inviting anyone and everyone to participate. She is collecting video documentation of the Torch Relay, Olympics, Paralympics, and all related celebrations (and problems) from every conceivable source in order to put together an alternate “unofficial” chronicle of the events from a pedestrian point of view.Imagine if everybody had camera phones, iPods, Blackberries, and digital cameras at Woodstock, or on the fields of Vietnam, or at JFK’s assassination. Our view of any such events would be enhanced and altered significantly if seen from a myriad of unofficial angles.
Already under way, Liddle is collecting guerilla video from the along the torch relay route. She seeks video “documenting any aspect of the Olympic games and celebrations that are happening in Vancouver and Whistler.”
She will then project these unedited videos in chronological order onto the outer wall of the building in the Lower East Side of Vancouver that houses the gallery of the project’s curator, Jeffrey Boone. Images from these videos will also be considered for a follow-up book.
If you must be in Vancouver / Whistler during the 2010 Olympics, by all means use your camera and join in Liddle’s We Are Watching project. Send clips to wearewatching2010@gmail.com and check out her blog liddlethought for more details.
