Liquid Assets – Major Money Grabs
You’ve been pondering this question for years, and lucky you, here are the answers. The question: what are the most expensive liquids in everyday life?
I think it’s safe to say that without common tap water, most of us would die. I guess the laws of supply and demand are being swayed by an overwhelming supply at the moment, because tap water is “free” in Vancouver, BC. It’s paid for by property taxes. It’s probably pretty cheap in any non-desert part of North America. Lucky thing.
Gasoline – well, don’t get me started. Or, let’s… Today it’s about $1.09 per liter here in British Columbia. That’s $1.01 in US currency. (Hm, near parity. How about that! Nice work, W.) At 3.785 liters per gallon, that makes our local gas US$3.82 per gallon. It’s been worse.
But that’s not nearly as expensive as – drum roll please… soda pop! Let’s stick to US dollars for the rest of this. If you can still find a machine that’ll give you a 12 ounce can of Coke for $0.75, that works out to $8.00 per gallon. Keep it out of your gas tank!
Maple syrup is way above pop, especially lately. An economy jug of the real stuff goes for $17 per liter, or about $64.00 per gallon.
But booze is even more expensive – at least here in Canada. Prices are controlled by the government, with supply and demand going out the window. Garden variety vodka knocks you off your feet at $176 per gallon.Blood is much higher. Expect to be charged at a rate of $2500 per gallon by the hospital. Major money grabbing going on here, since much of this blood is donated. Donors may even sell their blood for as much as $250 per gallon, so who’s sucking up all that extra money?
It’s a popular notion that printer ink is the most expensive common liquid, weighing in at as much as $8,000 per gallon. But wait…
But the champion money grab liquid is perfume. Regular old Chanel No. 5 costs about $9,800 a gallon, and it’s estimated that 99 percent of that goes to packaging and advertising.
