My Clock’s Smarter Than Your Clock

I hate wearing a watch. Schedules are confining and interrupt the flow of my day. My VCR lets me skirt the rigors of watching TV when the schedules tell me to watch it. But sometimes you just need to know what time it is.

This is why I have clocks. Because I have to. But they don’t have to be boring clocks. They may as well have some entertainment value or a coolness factor. So here are four clocks I can recommend for their special abilities.

For the retired, the lazy, and the millions of unemployed (thanks a lot, W), there’s the Day Clock. At least you’ll know what day of the week it is in your otherwise endless cycle of sleeping and eating. I actually glance at mine when setting my VCR (“Breaking Bad” is on Sundays). This mahogany clock looks pretty classy, measures 10 inches by 12 inches by 1 inch, and runs on just one AA battery. This Voice Recognition Alarm Clock is a way cool idea for those of us who hate fumbling with buttons and switches. Its Star Trek technology recognizes your queries in any language, like “what time is it?”, “record memo”, “cancel alarm”, “nightlight” and more. You have a choice of alarm sounds – including your own recorded message or having your TV turn on – and it will call out the time to you whenever you ask. Plug it into the wall, but use 3 C batteries as backup. 4 inches wide, 3 inches thick, 7.1 inches high.
This teeth-rattling Sonic Boom Alarm Clock would have assured that I never missed a school bus as a kid, so thank goodness they only came up with it since. Not only will the 3 3/4 inch by 1 1/4 inch shaker rattle your bed for up to an hour, but an adjustable alarm will make you feel like the Walls of Jericho are about to tumble. It gets its juice from either AC or DC current, and can be adjusted to 12- or 24-hour cycles. The snooze button buys you 9 minutes, but I wouldn’t want to wake up like that twice! I have a Digital Photo Travel Clock on my night table at home. Call me sentimental – or suffering from short term memory loss – but I sometimes like to look at a slide show of my cherished ones from the comfort of under my covers. You can load up to 50 photos from your PC with the USB cable, included. The back lit clock display gives you time, calendar, and temperature. Runs on 3 button batteries, also included.
