Okay kiddies, gather ’round and listen. Back in my day we bought record “singles” – also called “45′s” because they revolved 45 times per minute on the turntable. They were 7-inch discs of grooved vinyl with at least one song on each side. When cassette tapes came out, a “singles” version would usually have a different song on each side. This got a little weird when the songs weren’t of similar length. There was an annoying delay at the end of the shorter song before the cassette reversed to play the other side. The music industry finally gave up on the 2-for-1 when things went digital.
It was a traumatic transition for record companies (What are they called now? CD companies? MP3 companies?) that were so used to the 2-song method to milk extra income for themselves and their facilitators. Royalties were based on units sold, and a hit song with a terrible B-side paid each side equally nonetheless. Not that this was always the case, but many producers, disc jockeys, and lawyers were credited as the writers or co-writers of B-side songs merely as a form of kickback payment. |
Today’s singles are free of such stigma. Each song is judged on its own merits. Well, more or less. I mean, it’s still the songs with the most paid exposure that become the hits. Quality and musical integrity have far less to do with making a hit than does repetitive playing through the media channels. This is one reason that music companies (that’s what they’re called!) detest free downloads from the Internet. The controlled feeding of musical product is thus taken out of their micromanaging hands. How dare the public choose their own hit songs!
To meet the download revolution half way – and to redirect some control and profit back into their own coffers – music companies now allow and encourage free samples such as you’re hearing via the Amazon widgets on this page. If you like the sample you hear, just click the appropriate link and for less than the cost of a pack of gum, the song is yours to download and play back through your iPod, computer, TV, DVD player or even your cell phone.
Of course if you suffer from short attention span, listening to an endless stream of free sample clips through these AmazonMP3 widgets could be all you need. Enjoy!
