The Old Brush-Off

Philips Sonicare Essence 5300 Power Toothbrush

Brush 100 times, brush up and down, brush all sides of your teeth, brush your tongue and cheeks, brush with softer brushes, brush right and left evenly, brush three times a day - hell, just brush off! No wonder so many of us skimp on our oral obligations.

After years of battling carpel tunnel syndrome, I finally got a battery-powered toothbrush and as a result got fewer complaints from my dentist. Okay, I knew I was onto something. Then I upgraded to a Philips Sonicare rechargeable model and it was all smiles at the dentist.

That’s the trick: power wash your enamel. Nothing fancy required. Just a little electrical oomph. You save on challenging your arm-jaw coordination, and plaque is worn down while your gums toughen up.

The Philips Sonicare has a 2-minute timer in case you zone out while brushing (early morning, for instance), but that’s it for the bells and whistles. Save your cash and skip the more expensive Elite models. Fancy timers and LEDs are for coffee makers, not toothbrushes. Simpler models have less that can go wrong with them. You’ll need the occasional package of replacement brush heads, so save your cash for that instead.
