This week Switzerland not only banned the building of minarets – the ornate spires typically found on Muslim temples – but went the extra step of putting the ban in their constitution. The Swiss made no pretense about the reason why; they clearly identified it as an attempt to “save” Switzerland from becoming an Islamic state.

It’s comforting to know that Americans aren’t the only xenophobes in the world. In Canada, they seem to bend over backward to accommodate minorities. They still label everything in French even though the minority French-speaking Canadians have a rapidly dwindling presence. Mounties can now wear beards and turbans. The National Anthem is now sung in a second language (English; it was originally written in French). Women in burkas can vote, despite breaking the law that voters must be identifiable. They even let cantankerous Americans like me live here!

Anyway, I don’t think that banning architecture is a very effective move against societal change. The Chinese are buying the world, after all, and pagodas have nothing to do with it.

How did Switzerland ever get their reputation of political neutrality in the first place? They aided the Nazis in stealing untold millions from Jews, Catholics, French, Russians, Gays, and every other trod-upon group during the ’30s and ’40s. To this day the Swiss continue to hide any ill-gained monies from anybody for a price.

Okay, I guess technically they aren’t taking sides if in fact they take every side. Again, for a price.

Maybe that’s it. This may be just a ploy to strong-arm the Muslim world into using the nefarious services of Swiss banks to a greater degree. If Muslims pump enough money into the Swiss economy, I’m sure the constitution can be amended in their favor.

It works in America and Canada.
