Vance Gilbert is a God
| With an angelic tenor voice and devilish wit, Vance Gilbert has conquered coffee houses and church basements from coast to, well, inland. Okay, his fame and fortune haven’t caught up with his awesome talent yet, but stop kicking yourself and go discover this amazing man.
As a songwriter, Vance Gilbert captures deep emotions with an amazing poetic style. His themes are culled from real life – his as well as yours. A song about depression or suicide will hit home hard, yet Vance will spin right around and make your spirit soar with a love song. At times Vance Gilbert’s sense of humor threatens to override his musical presence. He has amazing rapport with his audience, and combined with a startling fast wit he can easily riff comedic for 20 minutes before remembering to sing us another fantastic song. As folk singer racial demographics go, Vance falls into a rare category: Black. Frankly, the change is refreshing. He’s a traditional folk troubadour – usually performing alone with guitar – but offers edgier, more flavorful material than most other folkies. When you hear Vance refer to his racial self-awareness, it has more impact than coming from White civil rights sympathizers. |
But Vance Gilbert isn’t about being Black. His songs tell stories and jokes, speak of enlightenment and despair, and simply take you away. He’s an amazing musician, an unparalleled mimic of certain musical legends (and instruments!), and has a couple of vocal tricks up his sleeve that will awe you in live performances.
Check out samples of just a few of his albums here. Catch him live if at all possible. Visit his website and get to him. He’s already a superstar – it’s just too bad most people don’t know it yet.
