What Art Program Do You Photoshop With?

There are some pretty amazing doctored digital photos on the Internet lately. Unless they are way-out surreal (see Worth1000.com), they can fool even the experts. Although many different graphics programs are used to create these manipulated images, they are collectively known as having been “Photoshopped.” What a marketing coup for Adobe Photoshop to get all that unearned credit!

It always bugs me that Adobe Photoshop gets all the glory when it’s just one of many digital art programs. It’s the most convoluted one, too, in my opinion. While all art programs have similar functions, the developers of Photoshop feel compelled to be different. They use different terms, non-intuitive menus, and a graphical interface that confounds many of us.

Sure, worshipers of the Photoshop will claim there’s nothing better, that the annoyingly troublesome configuration somehow separates the rabble from the elite. Hog spit. The developers know they can’t be significantly better than Corel Paint Shop Pro – at least for the basics – so they decided to justify charging five-to-ten times as much by being more difficult to use, adding bells and whistles that nobody will use, and thereby giving the illusion of a more valuable program. Hog snot. Snails don’t taste any better when you call them escargot.

Then there’s the hackneyed argument that you need a Mac to do graphics, and that Photoshop is THE Mac graphics program. Hog poo. Okay, grant it Macs are better than PCs. But I run Windows XP on my iMac for the sole purpose of using Paint Shop Pro. The combined cost of WinXP, Paint Shop Pro, and Parallels to run it on Mac was still less than the cost of Photoshop alone.

And keep in mind that most people – the non-pro’s of the world – were introduced to digital graphics through the little free resident Windows program called Microsoft Paint. Often derided as simple and extremely limited, it nonetheless set the stage for millions to develop their graphics skills to the point of buying more sophisticated programs. Then Photoshop comes along and with a snobby air demands that you learn an entirely new way to do the same things.

Go ahead and buy Photoshop. Some people need to drive a Porsche. It may not be significantly better, but it’s pretty darn good once you get the feel for it. Plus you have bragging rights, right? But the best bang for your buck is Paint Shop Pro. Or stick with Paint, which is what Jason Baalman (aka EclecticAsylumArt) used to re-create DaVinci’s “Mona Lisa” in this YouTube video:
