Last week I wrote about costumes that people forced their dogs to wear. Not the usual turtleneck sweaters and booties that those little pocket puppies are forced to endure all year, but honest-to-goodness Hallowe’en costumes like a Pirate, a Giant Frog, and yes, a Giant Hot Dog. The humiliation!

In researching these canine costumes, I came across something quite startling: a costume for cats!

For the uninitiated, this may not seem too strange. Cats and dogs are too often mistaken for the coffee and cream of domestic pets, two sides of the same coin. But believe me, that is a social myth of monumental proportions.

As the adage accurately states, “Dogs have masters, cats have servants.” Dogs are considered “Man’s best friend” because, unlike cats, they put up with all the crap we heap on them. Cats do not.

Dogs will obey commands, while cats ignore them. Dogs will feel guilty, while cats know they’re never wrong. Dogs will allow themselves to be dressed up as a Giant Ladybug, while cats simply will not.

Therefore it astonished me to find costumes for cats. But to fortify my belief in the uncooperative nature of the feline beast, I noticed that all these costumes – and there aren’t very many – are more restraints than outerwear. In other words, once fastened onto their little furry bodies, these costumes are about as easy to remove as a straitjacket.
